Just to bring a little sanity to the state-wide wild euphoria over the amazing feats of David Ortiz, and the joy over the exquisite hitting zone he is now undeniably in, we cannot avoid putting a little cold hard mathematics to the justifiably jubilant situation.
Pap’s pace is now: 162/40 x 1= 4 for the year. But that of course goes out the window, again considering the amazing zone he is finally in.
But, for Pap, even with this tear, to break Bonds’ single season home run record of 73 here in the summer of 2009, the numbers remain quite daunting:
162/122 x 73 = 97. Pap would have to hit home runs at an annualized pace of no less than 97 (to get 73 more to add to the 1 he’s already got) to break the record this year! (I said it was daunting.)
Relative to Bonds career mark of 763 home runs, the task for Pap is still quite formidable:
Coming into 2009…………………….………….....…………..................……..289
Optimistically, concede him the single season record in ’09…....…..74
………………………….....………..................So End of 2009……....……..….363
………………………………………...............…Bonds Career Mark…......……763
………………………..............……………..…Pap Then Needs…..….......…..400
Pap is at least 36, give him 4 more years until he’s 40…….....…../4
……..…....………………Pap Then Needs to Hit Each Year..........100!
Meanwhile, the Yankees have won 8 straight, and Johnny D, Rodriguez, and Teixeira are getting it together. I doubt it’s gonna be the Jays or Rays that the Sox will be worrying about in September.
