The Immortal Bard and Captain Quint

Watching Wakefield ‘pitch’ reminds me of the interminable agony of Quint scraping his fingernails on that town hall blackboard. Bard sure was a breath of fresh air, after that fifth inning torture. But still more of the same…Sox now 4 runs or less in 13 of 19…yet another starter blow-up…Pap 0 for 4, and it sure looked like he gave that shot to center about all he had, deep but Wells had it all the way. And his hard liner to first would have been foul if not caught. Sox 9 and 10 over those 19, while the now first place Yanks are 14-4 over their last 18.

  1. Ortiz hit another fly ball to the fence that was caught today . He seems to be hitting the ball well more frequenly but they are ot carrying like they used to . Hard to say if it is cutting back on steroids or getting older . Maybe both .

Well the Sox would not have won the two world series without him . They will not win without him this year unless they make a big trade for a top DH so may as well leave him in for the year and hope for the best.

  2. I know how you know that he's getting older, but how do you know that he's actually cutting back on steroids...other than the fact that he's hitting like he's almost as frozen as Ted Williams?

  3. As I've said earlier, the Sox should be thinking about a level of offensive transition in the near future.

I'd say a realistic assessment of the Sox full year offensive capability next year is:

    Avg HR
    Ellsbury .300 5
    Pedroia .315 5
    Youk .310 25
    Bay .280 30
    Drew .260 20
    Pap .240 15
    Lowell .275 15
    Catcher .225 15
    Shortstop .250 5

That's just average, which is what their offense really is now, with several elements getting old. With their fan base and revenue, they need to be thinking about how they can match up with the Yankees in the near future. That means looking hard not only at DH, but also at catcher, third base, and shortstop. And hoping that their vaunted pitching staff can start to live up to its potential. (And Wakefield has to go, if purely due to aethestics and collective fan misery. Hopefully, Bucholz or Bowden.)
